DL Moody, Rivers of the Spirit

When doing research on the fire of the Holy Spirit, I came across Dr. Michael Brown's book, Whatever Happened to the Power of God. Here below is a brief excerpt below along with some thoughts of my own and a few pertinent Scriptures from the Word of God.A burden came upon Sarah Anne Cooke, a Free Methodist, to pray that the Lord would give evangelist D.L. Moody the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire. Sarah and her friend Mrs. Hawxhurst, who was a widow, seated themselves in the front row of Dwight's church, and while he preached, they prayed. After the service they would say to him, "We have been praying for you." Unnerved, Dwight responded, "Why don't you pray for the people?" The ladies replied, "Because you need the power of the Spirit."Unexpectedly, a great hunger began to form in Dwight's soul. He said later48, "I did not know what it was, and I began to cry out as I never did before. I really felt that I did not want to live if I could not have this power for service."But the power would not come, primarily because Dwight refused to heed the call "to go out all over the land." Mrs. Cooke said, "Mr. Moody's agony was so great that he rolled on the floor and in the midst of many tears and groans cried to God to be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire." Dwight's inner struggle refused to resolve. He was so determined to stay in Chicago regardless of God's repeated voice whispering to his spirit: "Go out and preach the Gospel all over the land."The cry of Dwight's heart was that God would fill him with the Holy Spirit. That desire continued to overwhelm him and rule over all others. Following the great Chicago fire, during which Moody's church was burned down, nearly all the chains holding him to Chicago were snapped. The remaining chain was his own will. His unyielding will was the cause for his inner turmoil, which continued unabated. Yet he craved God's power. Moody was wrestling, panting for a Pentecost.When Moody came to the end of himself and surrendered his will to the will of God, the last chain snapped. Immediately an overpowering sense of God's presence flooded his soul. Almighty God had come to him. Without wasting a moment's time Dwight locked himself in a nearby friend's room so he could be alone with God. The room seemed ablaze with God. He stretched out on the floor and lay bathing his soul in the Divine. Of this communion and mountain top experience Moody later wrote, "I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand."Dwight's will and determination suddenly came under new management as God remolded him and left him as gentle and tender as a baby. No more would he choose his path. It was up to God to do that. Thankfully, Dwight thought, I was all the time tugging and carrying water. But now I have a river that carries me.The rivers of the Holy Spirit should flow forth from the belly of every believer in Christ (John 7:37-39). The Holy Spirit is freely given by the Father in heaven to whosoever will ask for this blessed Person within the holy Trinity (Luke 11:13). It is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit saith the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6).The above excerpt has been taken from Paul Davis' book "Holy Ghost Fire or Hellfire?
